The difference between catastrophe and coverage often comes down to someone taking the time to explain your options.

In this spirit, we have provided the following preliminary guide to help clarify and aid you in understanding some of the more frequently-used auto insurance terms you'll find on your policy:

Liability: intends to protect your assets if you are found legally responsible for a covered accident, including certain expenses associated with bodily harm sustained by the other party (as provided by your policy and state law). This coverage will also provide for your legal defense if a suit is brought against you as a result of this accident.

Comprehensive: intends to cover damage caused by contact with animals, theft, fire, vandalism, and glass breakage along with other non-collision related accidents in accordance with the policy (subject to deductible and except as excluded or limited by the policy).

Collision: intends to cover physical damage to your vehicle resulting from collision with another vehicle or standing object (again, this is subject to your deductible).

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury: intends to cover damages due to bodily injury that you and other passengers of your vehicle are legally entitled to from another driver who is uninsured or underinsured (as provided by your policy and state law). Not available in all states. Some states offer this as separate coverages.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Property Damage: intends to cover damages to your property and property of others in your vehicle at the time of loss that you are legally entitled to from another driver who is uninsured or underinsured (as provided by your policy and state law). Not available in all states. Some states offer this as separate coverages.

Medical Payments/Personal Injury (PIP): covers necessary expense for medical or funeral services provided to you and your passengers as result of an accident.

Other Coverages & Features:

Towing & Labor: pays for towing expense from point of vehicle disablement and labor expense for repairs made at point of vehicle disablement (up to selected limit as stated in policy).

Loss of Use: (aka Rental Car Reimbursement) pays for a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired due to a covered loss (up to selected limit as stated in policy).

Sound, Picture & Data Equipment/Special Equipment: pays for loss to described equipment that was not originally installed in a covered vehicle or is not permanently installed in a covered vehicle.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) - pays for use of described parts furnished by an original equipment manufacturer (when available) to repair or replace damaged parts.

Additional Coverage for Customization: pays for loss to devices, accessories, enhancements, and changes other than those offered by the manufacturer of the motor vehicle specifically for that model, which alter the appearance, performance or function of a motor vehicle.
