Closing the front door to fraud is one challenge. Deciding where to set the bar for entry is another.
Derek Barrs, administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, joins TN Truck Thought for a substantive discussion about the standards that are shaping trucking and the work required to strengthen them. Alongside TrueNorth’s Peter Berg and Scopelitis Transportation Consulting’s P. Sean Garney and Steve Keppler, the conversation brings regulatory, risk and industry perspectives to some of trucking’s most consequential questions.
One important question discussed includes whether all this work ultimately makes trucking safer. Barrs grounds his perspective in a clear principle:
“Safety has to be your foundation of every single thing that you do.”
Berg extends the discussion from a risk perspective, drawing an important distinction between setting higher safety standards and consistently meeting them:
“If you’re just executing to the minimum viable standards, then the argument is going to be, ‘Why didn’t you do more?’ The inverse of that is if your standards are up here and you can’t consistently execute to those standards each and every time in a documented way, then that is used against you.”
Tune in as Administrator Barrs and the team unpack the issues at hand and take a closer look at where trucking goes from here.
